Some folks think , I'll dig a 30,000 gal hole and build my own pond. What they don't realize is what is required to filter 30,000 gals. Fish need fresh water. Weekly 5/10 % of volume in summer plus 2x 3750 / 4000 gal water change is what I do for my 5000 gal. Imagine 30,000gals. I had a friend from work who did this, 30,000 gals and about 250 to 300 koi!! Yes you heard right. I said where is your filteration?? What do you mean?? He asked!! You mean like a canister filter...i started laughing...by 6th month he had a sespool of anaerobic bacteria that you could smell down the block. Loll .. Winter is more forgiving because fish are dormant and only eat wheat germ once a month during warmer days if any. Today at noon water is 39degs not a good idea to feed your fish. They won't be able to digest food. Winter time I get a rest although the way I set up my pond I just plug in and wait to drain and net some leaves. I have a settlement tank that drains all poop and it doesn't stay in the pond. Sometimes I grow out my cichlids during the warm season from late March to early October, so that they get some size..they love it!!!!! They dont bother my koi at all...
